School Reopening and COVID-19 Updates
Sept. 14 message
Good Evening SPS Staff & Families,
Today we experienced a successful launch to distance learning. Over 30,000 students started the year in real-time distance learning, and we greatly appreciated the overwhelming amount of positive feedback and encouragement sent to staff. Anticipated issues were quickly identified and addressed. We know this experience is going to be an adjustment and will present challenges along the way, and we are committed to working through issues and supporting all students.
Air Quality Update
Real-time distance learning will be provided as planned for all students.
Due to the continued air quality conditions in Spokane County, we continue to encourage all staff and families to exercise caution and minimize time spent outdoors.
Essential services will be provided for students as we continue real-time distance learning. SPS Day Camps, Express Childcare and meal distribution will occur on Tuesday, Sept. 15. Students in Day Camps and Express will remain indoors, and families can pick up meals at school distribution sites. Limited in-person instruction planned for a small number of students who need critical services will be available by parent discretion as scheduled.
We ask that staff and parents limit the number of times they come in and out of our schools to reduce smoke from entering buildings.
5-Day Meal Kit Update
Using projections based on the meal kit preorder form and the number of meals served during the spring and summer, our Nutrition Services staff prepared 8,500 meal kits -- more than double the number of meals served in the spring. This morning, we received more than 14,000 requests for meal kits at our 45 distribution sites, resulting in long lines and families needing to return for a later pickup time. We are sorry if you did not get a meal kit today, and invite you to pick up a kit on Wednesday.
⇒ Please help us ensure we have enough meal kits at each school by filling out the preorder form by Thursday at 9 p.m. for pick up the following week. Thank you for your patience!
If you or your student are having technical trouble, please contact email@example.com or 509.354.7636.
We appreciate your partnership as we navigate this new educational environment together.
