Make it yourself: Playdough

Here's an idea from our SPS Superintendent Shelley Redinger:

This is the recipe for homemade playdough that my mom used to make for us when we were home sick, or over a long holiday break.

Fun Playdough Recipe

  • 2 cups flour
  • ¾ cup salt
  • 4 tsps. cream of tartar
  • 2 cups lukewarm water
  • 2 tbsp. vegetable oil
  • Food coloring

In a large pot, stir together flour, salt, and cream of tarter. Next add the water and oil. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly. Keep stirring until the dough has thickened and begins to form a ball.

Carefully remove from heat and place on wax paper. Allow to cool slightly and knead until very smooth. Divide the dough into 4-6 balls and place each in a quart sized plastic bag. Start with 5 drops of food coloring and add more for darker, brighter colors.

Knead the dough in the bags so it doesn’t stain your hands.

Now, you are ready to play!  Have fun!
