STUDENT ADVISOR REPORT: Discussion of PSAT day, which is Oct. 16.
HEARING OF DELEGATES: Six speakers discussed the Music Innovates program.
CONSENT AGENDA: Unanimously approved.
CONTRACT AGREEMENT: Dr. Linda McDermott, associate superintendent for School Support Services, and Ramon Alvarez, executive director of human resources, presented an overview of a three-year agreement with the Spokane Education Association. The agreement takes steps to address long-term financial sustainability and the wellness, mental health, and safety of students and staff. The board unanimously approved the agreement.
GLOVER MIDDLE SCHOOL DESIGN: Dr. Mark Anderson, associate superintendent for Capital Projects; Greg Forsyth, Capital Projects director; principal Mark Lund and NAC Architects of Spokane architects Dana Harbaugh and Melissa McFadden introduced the design concept for the new Glover Middle School. Groundbreaking happens on Oct. 10. The new school is planned to be open in the fall of the 2021-22 school year.
TECHNOLOGY UPDATE: Dr. Adam Swinyard, associate superintendent for Teaching and Learning, provided a technology performance update. The three-year implementation plan has been completed ahead of schedule, including the establishment of a formal governance structure, conducting a vulnerability assessment, and improving technology selection and prioritization process.
SAFETY AND SECURITY: Dr. McDermott presented a high-level overview of an initial workplan for implementing recommendations in the Safety and Security Audit conducted by Safe Havens International. Items in the workplan have been categorized into short-term (12 to 18 months), long-term (next 5 years), and combination targets.
BOARD REPORTS: Director Brian Newberry attended and applauded the Shaw Middle School groundbreaking ceremony. Director Newberry also attended the legislative assembly for state school board associations. Director Mike Wiser represented the school board on contractor interviews for rebuilding Joe Albi Stadium and the new northwest middle school.
SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT: Dr. Shelley Redinger discussed the decision to close school Oct. 9 and open schools the next day.
