Steve Barnes and Mike Crabtree in classroom

When Arlington Elementary was suddenly in need of a principal in the summer, Spokane Public Schools turned to two veteran leaders.

Meet Mike Crabtree and Steve Barnes, lifelong best friends, devoted grandfathers, and the beloved co-principals at Arlington. After decades of dedication to education (more than 40 years each!), these two educators found the perfect solution to retirement: they didn't fully retire at all.

Instead, Mike (retired 2012) and Steve (retired 2023) split principal duties at Arlington Elementary, allowing both of them to spend precious time caring for their own grandchildren during the week while still serving the school community they love.

Their unique arrangement has earned Arlington Elementary an affectionate nickname from students, staff, and even the superintendent: The "Grandpa School."

But don't let the nickname fool you. Mike and Steve say it's the incredible energy of the kids and staff that keeps them young and motivated to show up every day.

"We're good as long as we get our grandpa naps," they joke.

This is a heartwarming story about friendship, dedication, work-life balance, and proving that you're never too old to make a difference.
