At The Community School, project-based learning takes high school students out of the classroom and into the community to learn, think, and reflect. This quarter, students explored U.S. history through first-person Native American perspectives, emphasizing the importance of understanding “hard history.”
Students visited the Wellpinit Powwow Grounds, Fort Spokane, and the Northwest Museum of Arts and Culture, and welcomed guest speakers including SPS Director of Native Education Tamika LaMere, Dave Brown Eagle, and others. For their final project, Expose the Truth, students created original works, such as art or writing, to challenge historical erasure and foster deeper public understanding of overlooked histories.
We are grateful to the educators, guest speakers and community groups who supported TCS students on their learning journey. As we reflect on Native American Heritage Month, we hope all in our community will pursue learning about the Indigenous communities in the northwest and across the intercontinental United States, Canada, and the Americas.
