A recent field trip to the Garland Theater was more than just a fun activity for Rogers, Shadle Park and Lewis and Clark high school students.
“The purpose is to get our special education students out into the community and practicing life skills,” explained Special Education teacher Spring Shoupe.
With a smaller audience of their peers and teachers, the environment allowed students to learn what to expect when going to the movies, from waiting in line and buying concessions to finding a seat and behaving appropriately during the screening of “The Super Mario Bros. Movie.”
“We want to be a theater for everybody, and everybody should have that opportunity to go,” said theater co-owner Jasmine Dennis.
Today, Dec. 2, is Special Education Day, commemorating the authorization of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), which ensures that students with a disability are provided with a free, appropriate public education to their individual academic needs.
Our Special Education program is committed to creating opportunities that meet the unique learning needs of students from age 3 to 21. Thank you to all staff, families, and community members who play a role in helping our students succeed. Learn more about programs, services, and resources at Special Education.
