Lewis & Clark High School seniors Josephine Corbin and Claire Poulsen smile while holding acceptance gifts to the University of Washington.

Lewis and Clark High School seniors Claire Poulsen and Josephine Corbin were surprised last week with the University of Washington’s Presidential Scholarship.

They were two of just 15 students across the state to receive the scholarship, which awards recipients $10,000 per academic year. This may be the first time two students have been awarded at one school in the same year.

LCHS College and Career Readiness Facilitator Suzanne Maguire helped set up the surprise at the school Friday morning. The students’ families were there but not exactly sure why until UW representatives made the announcement.

“Honestly I kinda blanked for a second, I didn’t know what was happening,” said Claire. “Then I walk in and see the balloons and my parents and I know it’s something big.”

“I didn’t even know if I was going to get in, I was so worried,” Josephine said. “This is amazing, I feel so grateful.”

Claire echoed her feeling.

“I worked my tail off all four years to be where I am today and knowing that it’s not overlooked and I’m starting to get some recognition for it feel so good.”

"Both Josephine and Claire are young people who show extraordinary initiative and drive to do their best," said Suzanne. "I know they'll continue to make a positive impact at University of Washington and beyond."
