Students use sewing machines to create ribbon garments at Flett Middle School.

“Ribbon skirts are significant within the Native community. To be able to wear one at the powwow is pretty special.”

Native Education director Tamika LaMere shares how ribbon skirt and shirt sewing workshops bring students and community members together to learn and impart sewing skills while preserving the cultural significance of ribbon garments.

Students will be able to wear their regalia at Flett Middle School’s upcoming powwow celebrating more than 300 tribal nations represented within Spokane Public Schools.

All are welcome to attend the fourth annual Pauline Flett Powwow at Flett Middle School on Saturday, May 2, 2026, from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.
