A middle school student uses a needle to score clay in art class.

Flett Middle School art teacher Lizzie Zody walks students through a lesson in creating clay sculptures, highlighting technique and storytelling as they create a container and trinkets that are meaningful to them.

“Every sculpture that they make, every touch on their clay, is like a fingerprint there,” Zody points out as students delicately mold clay and etch details onto their pieces.

The calm atmosphere allows students to focus on the creative process and reflect on their interests, as middle school students figure out who they want to be.

“I think a lot of those teachable moments are really about slowing kids down a little bit,” Zody explained. “Art can be a place where they can build confidence. It’s also a place where they can learn a lot about themselves.”
