Newman Head Coach

New leadership signals a new era focused on culture, discipline, and Saxon PRIDE

Spokane, WA — February 15, 2026 — Joel E. Ferris High School has named Billy Newman as the next head football coach of the Ferris High School football program, Athletic Director Ryan Eucker announced today. Newman brings more than two decades of coaching experience, strong ties to the Spokane community, and a clear vision for developing student-athletes through discipline, accountability, and a team-first culture.

Newman’s appointment reflects Ferris High School’s commitment to strengthening its football program through character development, academic accountability, and meaningful partnerships with students, families, staff, and the broader community.

“This is an exciting moment for Ferris Football,” said Athletic Director Ryan Eucker. “Coach Newman brings passion, experience, and a strong commitment to developing student-athletes in body, mind, and character. His leadership will help us build a program defined by discipline, resilience, and Saxon PRIDE. We are excited to welcome him to the Ferris family and look forward to the impact he will have on our students, our program, and our community.”

A New Era for Ferris Football

Newman steps into the role focused on rebuilding culture, strengthening relationships, and establishing clear expectations for student-athletes both on and off the field.

“This football program will be built on school and community pride,” Newman said. “It is an honor to represent our school, our families, and everyone who supports us. Wearing this uniform means being accountable on and off the field.”

Under Newman’s leadership, Ferris Football will emphasize:

  • Character development and leadership growth

  • Academic accountability

  • Strong fundamentals and preparation

  • Family partnership and communication

  • A disciplined, team-first environment

The program will continue to reflect Ferris High School’s commitment to Saxon PRIDE — Perseverance, Respect, Integrity, Discipline, and Excellence.

Newman also emphasized the importance of collective responsibility in building a successful program.

“We are a family-oriented, team-first program,” Newman said. “Every player matters, every role matters, and every contribution counts. When individuals commit to the group, the whole becomes greater than the sum of its parts.”

A Proven Leader in Spokane Athletics

Newman began his coaching career in 2003 and has since built a reputation as a dedicated teacher of the game and mentor for young athletes. His experience includes coaching roles at North Central High School, East Valley High School, and multiple stints at Ferris High School. He has also coached youth sports throughout the Spokane community for more than 15 years, helping develop athletes across multiple levels.

In addition to his coaching experience, Newman has remained closely connected to the game through his work covering Washington State University football as a pregame and postgame radio contributor for the past eight years.

His leadership philosophy emphasizes strong relationships, community engagement, and long-term development of student-athletes.

Playing Career and Football Background

Newman’s football journey began in Southern California at Santa Margarita Catholic High School, where he played under nationally recognized head coach Jim Hartigan. As a senior, Newman rushed for more than 2,300 yards and scored 24 touchdowns while earning CIF Offensive Player of the Year honors and helping lead his program to championship success.

He continued his career at Washington State University under head coach Mike Price, where he transitioned to defense and emerged as a team captain and defensive leader for the Cougars. Newman recorded more than 300 career tackles and remains among Washington State’s top ten all-time leaders in tackles. During his time in Pullman, the Cougars achieved national rankings and sustained success within the Pac-10 Conference.

Following his collegiate career, Newman competed professionally, including opportunities with the Tennessee Titans, NFL Europe, and the Spokane Shock arena football organization during its inaugural season.

Building the Future of Ferris Football

Newman’s vision centers on developing complete student-athletes and building a sustainable program grounded in discipline, accountability, and community support.

“Football is a tool for growth, discipline, and resilience,” Newman said. “Our program exists to teach life through football and to develop young people who carry those lessons long after the final whistle.”

Ferris High School looks forward to welcoming Coach Newman and continuing to build a program defined by preparation, accountability, and Saxon PRIDE.
