“It totally rocked my world. Because you get to see so many different departments, see what it's like to be a nurse, everything that's required. It's so cool.”
Lewis and Clark High School senior Presley Barkstrom spent five days this summer at Pathways to Providence Nurse Camp with 30 other Spokane-area high school juniors and seniors.
Students participated in simulation labs, toured facilities, learned CPR techniques with instruction from nurses and clinical educators at Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center & Children's Hospital and Providence Holy Family Hospital.
More than 100 students applied for this year’s second annual camp with 10 students from Ferris, Rogers, North Central, and Lewis and Clark selected during the competitive, blind application process.
There is no cost to participate, as Providence hopes the experience will inspire local students to pursue careers in health care and help develop the next generation of nurses in the Inland Northwest.
“We’ve gotten it from day one, and our cohort from last year, of kids saying, ‘I thought I wanted nursing, but now I really know that I want to do nursing,’” said Heather Sulpizio, Providence Human Resources Business Partner.
