REGISTER TO RIDE THE BUS: Yellow bus registration for the 2025-26 school year is now open! Students must register each school year, even if they're already riding the bus. Find information on eligibility and register here: https://www.spokaneschools.org/page/registration

Dear SPS Families,
It’s time to start thinking about yellow bus registration for the 2025-26 school year! As a reminder, students must register for yellow bus transportation ahead of each new school year, even if they’ve been riding the bus during the current school year.
The Zum registration portal is tentatively scheduled to open for current students next week. We will send you a message when it’s open.
Who can ride the bus?
• Elementary students who attend their neighborhood school and live outside the walk boundary (more than a 1-mile straight line distance from school to home).
• Middle school students who attend their neighborhood school and live outside the walk boundary (more than a 1.25-mile straight line distance from school to home).
• High school students who attend their neighborhood high school, live outside the walk boundary (more than a 1.5-mile straight line distance from school to home), and live outside the Spokane Transit Authority (STA) service area. High school students living within STA’s service area will continue to have STA as a transportation option.
• K-8 Option School Students.
• 9-12 Option School Students living outside STA’s service area.
Families who need specialized transportation should contact their case manager rather than use Zum’s registration portal.
Qualifying HEART students attending a school outside of their neighborhood attendance boundary should contact the HEART team for transportation arrangements.
What do I need to register my student?
You must know your student’s ID number to begin the registration process. If you don’t know your student’s ID number, submit your email to this form and you will receive an email with your student’s ID number. Please save your student's ID number for future use.
I have a student who will be new to Spokane Public Schools next year. Will I be able to sign them up for bus transportation?
New students to Spokane Public Schools, including kindergarteners, will be able to sign up Aug. 5, once the 2025-26 school year data is fully processed. Eligible students who register in August will have a seat on the bus.
Is there a registration deadline for current students?
Registrations for current students should be submitted by July 15, 2025, to ensure bus assignment by the start of the 2025-2026 school year. The registration portal will remain open past that date, and late registrations will be processed in the order received as quickly as possible.
When will I know my student’s bus stop location and route?
SPS will work with Zum toward the goal of having routes finalized by Aug. 22, 2025. Registering current students for yellow bus transportation by July 15 greatly assists us in being able to make routes available by Aug. 22. Tentative bus stop locations are provided during the registration process.
Find all transportation information on the SPS website.
If you have more questions, please use our Let’s Talk portal.
Thank you,
Spokane Public Schools

QUESTION: Why do we need all-weather fields in every region of our city?
With increased interest and participation in after-school sports and activities at all of our five neighborhood high schools, our existing grass fields are wearing down faster than we can maintain them.
A partnership with Spokane Parks and Recreation to create a citywide system of all-weather surface fields will represent the lowest possible cost to provide a high-quality play experience because we can program more activities on one all-weather surface field than on two to three grass fields.

QUESTION: What’s happening at Madison Elementary School?
ANSWER: The Together Spokane proposal for Madison Elementary School, the oldest northside school in the district, includes replacing the 75-year-old building with a new two-story structure on the same footprint. This new building would accommodate special education programs that are currently housed in five portable buildings outside the main school.
The school’s location, adjacent to Franklin Park at North Division Street and West Queen Avenue, has created an opportunity for Spokane Public Schools and Spokane Parks and Recreation to explore sharing land and resources. This collaboration would co-locate the new Madison building with an enclosed, publicly accessible, multi-use recreational facility.
The proposed “Field House” could include multiple indoor courts, one of which could be fully partitioned for use as Madison’s primary gym and cafeteria space. The Field House would also have a separate entrance, allowing the public to use the facility for basketball, volleyball, pickleball, and other community activities both during and after school hours.
Co-locating public spaces helps save resources and taxpayer dollars. A similar framework has been implemented before, such as when the Spokane Public Library built its Hillyard branch at Shaw Middle School.
As SPS and Parks developed this proposal and other Together Spokane projects, numerous community organizations expressed interest in investing capital and entering agreements for priority program use. The Boys & Girls Clubs of Spokane County, Pacific Northwest Qualifier and Spokane Hoopfest have signed letters of intent to collaborate with SPS and Parks for Together Spokane. Their participation will enhance spaces for education, recreation, and community wellness, benefiting Spokane residents of all ages.
