Tatriana Muravez has been a school counselor at Flett Middle School since the northwest Spokane school opened its doors in 2022. Learn about her job, the challenges, and how counselors support students.
“These kids come in and a lot of them are carrying difficult things or heavy things,” she explained, noting that it can be difficult when there’s not a simple solution to some problems. “I can’t fix that, but I can be a steady, consistent adult for them that's safe and can be alongside them. And I'm always in their corner ready to help them.”
School counselors are master’s-level mental health professionals who support students' emotional well-being, relationships, and learning, while also helping families and teachers work together so students have what they need to learn and succeed.
These positions are supported in part by the local Educational Programs and Operations levy, which helps to fund academic programs, services, and student activities and athletics that are not funded by the state. The local levy makes up about 15% of Spokane Public Schools' annual operating budget. A replacement levy will be presented to voters on the Nov. 3, 2026, ballot.
