Cross Country Starts 9/10!

Cooper Cross Country!

First Practice: Tuesday, September 10, 2019

Dear Parents,

It’s time for Cross Country season! Active4Youth is a local organization that provides funding for activities for Spokane area kids. We’re fortunate to partner with Active4Youth once again this year to put on an inner-school Cross Country program. Cross country is for any K- 6th grade student who likes to run. We will work on building personal fitness, individual goal setting, and running techniques. This year your student will have the opportunity to run against different schools in zone meets at Hays Park. There will be two inner-school zone meets so students will be able to see their progress throughout the season. Parents are encouraged to attend these meets and cheer on their student. If your child places in the top ten of his/her race or runs a qualifying time for his/her grade they will qualify for the “All City” meet and have the opportunity to run with other students from all the elementary schools.

Cross Country Participation Guidelines:

*Proper clothing and shoes should be worn during practice and meet times. Please see the attached calendar of practices/meets. Comfortable athletic shoes and sweats/shorts are encouraged. Participants should bring a sweatshirt or coat and long pants for practice as we get later into the fall and we see more cool days. Students may also bring a water bottle from home (with their name on it) and will also be given water breaks during practice.

*As with any Cooper after-school activity, Self-Manager student behavior is expected and required. If a problem should arise, parents will be contacted and further discipline will be implemented. If there is a continuing behavior concern, the student will be removed from the team. We want to encourage a safe and worthwhile activity for all involved. J

*Before the first practice, all students must register online.  All practices are held at Cooper.

*Students cannot participate or attend practice until FamilyID online forms are filled out.  If you are unable to register online, paper forms must be requested and must be are turned in to the office or your child’s teacher before they may attend practice.

*Attendance is required at all practices. Students will be required to have 5 practices before competing in a zone meet at Hays Park.

* This year we are inviting the kindergarten and first grade students at Cooper Elementary to join x-country. Coaches feel that for safety these students need closer supervision by a family member at practices and meets.   In order to keep these young runners safe, we are asking that a family member pick up their child after they race at the meet.  It would be very difficult for these young runners to wait more than an hour to take the activity bus back to the school. If you want you kindergartener or first grader to join x-country, they must have adult or older sibling supervision at practices/meets and be picked up after they run their race.

*All students will ride the bus to Hays Park on meet days.  Meets are on Wednesday, September 25th and October 9th @ 4:15.

* An activity bus will take bussers home after practices and meets. Crossing guards are not on duty after practice. Parents are responsible for the transportation of non-bus students after practice. Please pick your student up at 4:15pm on practice days.

*ALL STUDENTS ARE REQUIRED TO Have the Parent/Guardian Approval form filled out BEFORE meets start to be able to go home with the parent who has signed the form. This is school district policy.

*Siblings and school-age friends are not to be at practice without parent supervision.
