Welcome to Mr. Krestian's Science Classes 2023-2024!

  • Welcome everyone to the 2023-2024 school year! I am excited to be your student's science teacher, and my hope is that they leave my classroom loving science as much as I do! Please use this website to learn a little bit about me and some information about 7th grade science.

You may stay up to date with what we are doing in class by reading my emails with the weekly agenda and/or going to the General Channel in our class TEAM. Late work policy: all missing/late work will be accepted up to 2 days before the end of the quarter that they were assigned in without penalty.

    Syllabus/Supplies/Expectations

This year we are implementing a brand new curriculum from OpenSciEd. Below are the units we plan to cover in 7th Grade Science:

Unit 1: Chemical Reactions and Matter

    Unit 2: Cells and Systems

    Unit 3: Metabolic Reactions

Unit 4: Matter Cycling and Photosynthesis

    Unit 5: Ecosystem Dynamics

    Unit 6: Genetics

Unit 7: Natural Selection and Common Ancestry

Sometime around Spring Break will be Human Growth and Development

    Supplies Needed:

    • Mead-Style Composition Book (I apologize if you are getting this information late! Unfortunately, the "School Supply List" sent out to parents specified a 9x11 spiral notebook. Due to the new OpenSciEd curriculum, the 7th grade Science Team has decided to go with something cheaper and more portable instead. Good news, your teacher should have extras for anyone that does not have one!
    • Clear Scotch Tape (one or two hand-held dispensers should get you through the year)
    • Mechanical or Wooden Pencils and Erasers

~Optional, but useful, supplies include colored pencils and markers, a hand-held pencil sharpener, and a basic 4-function or scientific calculator. These and other items can be stored in a zipper-pouch and/or your locker until needed.~

     General Expectations:

    • Each student will also be issued a district laptop to use throughout the year.
    • Students will be asked to complete the majority of science work (i.e. labs, assignments, etc.) in their Science Notebook/workbook via paper and pencil.
    • Work in the Science Notebook will be graded every two-week cycle, using Science Scoring Slips.
    • Regardless of type, all assignments are expected to be completed and turned in by the appropriate due date.
    • Retakes and Redos: if a student is not satisfied with a score they earned on an assignment or test, they can retake or fix the assignment. Please read any and all feedback left by Mr. Krestian before attempting to fix it. In some instances, you may need to contact Mr. Krestian to find out more details on how and what needs fixing.
    • Students are expected to maintain a "Planner" that includes what was done in class each day plus any reminders/homework for the future.
    • For students who fall behind and/or are absent, please visit our General Channel on TEAMS as often as necessary. There you will find a summary of all the "goings-on" for each school day.

    About Mr. Krestian:

I graduated from Eastern Washington University with both a Bachelors of Science degree in Biology and a Masters of Science degree in Biology. I completed my Teacher Certification through the University of Idaho after working as a Freshwater Aquatic Biologist for over 12 years (9 months with the U.S. Geological Survey and over 11 years with a private consulting firm in Moscow, ID). I am married with 3 children and our family is very active in the soccer and running community. My wife and I both graduated from Ferris High School and we are so happy to call Spokane our home!

This is my eleventh year teaching science at Sacajawea, and I am looking forward to a year full of learning! In 2018, as part of my continuing professional development, I was able to attend the National Geographic Geo-Inquiry Summer institute in Jackson, Wyoming to learn about the Geo-Inquiry process; and I earned my National Board Teacher Certification in Science the same year. This year I am excited to begin implementing our new OpenSciEd science curriculum.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me and I will return your call or email as soon as possible. I have 3rd period prep so I am available from 11:19am to 12:11pm (Tuesday-Friday) or 11:42am to 12:29pm (Mondays). I can also be available before or after school by appointment.

    Thank you,

    Brian "B.J." Krestian
