Flett Flash 9/5/22

Flett Riverhawks,

It was a joy to open the doors to families last week to get a jump start on the school year. If you didn’t have a chance to meet with your child’s advisory teacher, know that they are a great contact point for questions or concerns. If they don’t know the answer, they can track it down or connect you with someone that does. If you do not have contact information for your child’s advisory teacher, please reach out to the office at 824-8000.

This week Flett will be on our Extended Advisory schedule to facilitate community building and review our S.O.A.R. (Safe, Organized, Accountable, & Respectful) expectations. There will be more about S.O.A.R. in a future Flash update. Be sure to share this video with your Flett student if they have not seen it yet. As a reminder, sixth graders have second lunch and seventh graders first lunch. Check out our bell schedules here.

Cell phones and social media. We have recieved numerous questions about cell phone use at Flett. We follow the Wait until 8th (14) model which is gaining ground throughout our nation. Click here to learn more on why you may want to consider waiting or adjusting your child's access to a cell phone and social media. We undertsand and support parental choice, however at Flett cell phones are not permitted to be in use during class or in the hallways. Students may access there phones before and after school and for limited times during lunch. Our intent is not to limit your access to your child. However, our experience tells us that use of phones and social media for young adolecents increases isolation and social discord. In fact, most school fights can be traced back to group texts and social media communication. We will continue to share more about our cell phone policies in the weeks ahead. Please let us know if you have concerns or questions.

In order to facilitate parking, pick-up, and drop-off at Flett, we have posted a map to our website under the Student Tab called Parent and bus pick-up and drop-off. There are two distinct drop-off and parking areas on the Flett campus.

  • The first entrance takes you to the bus drop-off area as well as the event parking lot. Park here for after-hours events to access the fields or the gym or when picking up students from clubs or after-school sports activities.
  • The second entrance takes you to the parent drop-off lane and visitor parking lot. Use this entrance if you are picking up or dropping off your student before and during the school day. Note that there are parking stalls for pick-up/drop-off parallel to the sidewalk to expedite this process. Please pull all the way forward before stopping to pick up or drop off your student. Please use the visitor parking stalls when leaving your vehicle unattended. Parking and dropping off on Wellesley is prohibited per city code. Help us be good neighbors and never block driveways or garage entrances along the south side of Wellesley.
  • IMPORTANT: For the first day only, due to the Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for students, the visitor/parent drop-off area will be closed. We will have safety and security personnel on-site to help manage traffic. For Tuesday AM, 9/6 only, please use the bus lane (first entrance) to drop off students. We will have extra staff on hand to ensure safe arrival. Pick-up will be in the second lot as described above.

We hope you had a great experience visiting Flett and meeting some of your child’s teachers. We look forward to continuing to partner with you during your child’s time at Flett. In an effort to improve communication, please ensure your contact information is always up-to-date in PowerSchool. We look forward to connecting with you soon.

In Partnership,
