Flett Flash 3/31/23

Flett Riverhawks:

As we head into spring break, we want to wish families a restful and fun-filled week. Make sure to get outside and enjoy the beautiful NW! Students have been taking advantage of many clubs, activities, and sports this spring. It isn’t too late to join a club or sign up for 7th grade sports and if students have down time, they can continue to access their online math and ELA programs.

After returning from the break, we are excited for our first annual Riverhawks SERVE Day on April 21. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact the office at JuliaS@spokaneschools.org. Additionally, we were honored to be approached to host and help plan for first ever Pauline Flett Powwow. Save the date for May 20, there is no cost to attend.

As you may be aware, Spokane Public Schools has been working to ensure that we live out our mission: Excellence for Everyone through Equity. The district has adopted a race and equity resolution with specific goals and strategies, some of which have already been implemented. We also have a department of Family and Community Engagement that strives to build bridges through culturally responsive engagement. Flett staff have participated in culturally responsive professional development and will continue to do so. More recently, some of our neighborhoods at Flett have had conversations related to inclusivity, including being able to identify bullying and racially charged language. We’ve had several guest speakers this year to help us broaden our perspectives, learn, and reach our school’s mission, which states: The mission of Pauline Flett Middle School is to create a gathering place where all are seen and empowered to be dreamers, ambitious learners, and involved global citizens. We encourage you to speak with your student about the power of language, what it means to be a global citizen, and when to go to an adult with a concern. For resources for talking to your student about this topic, see this article and another here.
