Partner of the Year
Each year, Gonzaga University recognizes individuals and agencies who have made a significant contribution to the community and to GU through their commitment to the Community Engaged Learning program. This year, GU named Logan Elementary their Community Partner of the Year.
For more than 20 years, Logan has partnered with GU through the Campus Kids Program—a one-on-one, campus-based mentoring program that helps 4th-6th graders succeed academically and socially. Campus Kids has grown from serving 20 Logan students to serving more than 100 at five nearby elementary schools. GU now has seven programs that work with youth in grades K-11 across 13 schools, resulting in 418 GU students mentoring 671 youth during the 2017-18 academic year.
In the past year, Logan and GU have partnered in many other ways, providing meaningful learning opportunities for GU students:
- GU’s Campus Kitchens Program launched the Logan Neighborhood Dinner, which provides free meals to neighborhood families and individuals every Tuesday.
- Logan ELD teacher Maria Zamora partnered with GU’s English Department so GU students can intern with Logan’s ELD Program.
- Logan Principal Brent Purdue serves on Gonzaga’s Place-Based Initiative Advisory Board and several staff members participated in GU’s Listening Project, helping identify new opportunities to partner with residents and community-based organizations across Northeast Spokane.
