September 9, 2021

 Dear Madison Parents and Students,

On your mark, get set, it’s time to run!   We are so excited to get back to cross country at our schools, we believe that ALL children can run/jog/speed walk.  Running outside raises endorphins, self-confidence and is a great brain boost for learning.  At Madison we encourage students to work on improving their own personal fitness during our season.

The Madison cross-country season will begin on Monday September 13, 3:10-4:15 PM.   Practice days will be Monday, Tuesday, and Thursdays.  Students in grades 1-6, and all levels of walkers or runners are welcome to participate. (Kindergartners who would like to try it out will need to be accompanied by a parent/guardian at every practice.)

Parent volunteers are encouraged to come and join in on the fun.  We appreciate our parent volunteers who help keep our runners safe!  Cross-country is a fun way to get in shape, stay in shape, and prepare for lifetime fitness.  If you would like to volunteer at our practices, please pick up a volunteer packet from the Madison front office.

Runners will have the opportunity to participate in at least two cross country meets at Audubon Park with the chance to qualify for the All-City cross country meet on October 26, 2021 @ Franklin Park.  We would like to extend a huge THANKYOU! to Active for Youth for helping to fund this terrific program for your children. www.active4youth.org

Runners should wear appropriate clothes for this type of activity.  Runners should dress in bright colored layers.  Students can bring a change of clothes to school if they’d like.  Comfortable athletic shoes are great investments, they really save the runners bodies since most of our running is done on cement.  It is a great idea to pack along a snack and water for hungry runners after they finish their workout.

We will be following COVID safety guidelines for outdoor activity…

  • Students may or may not run with their mask on.
  • Spectators will be expected to distance at meets and not gather near the start/finish areas.
  • All forms, including COVID waiver (paper) will need to be turned in before any student is allowed at practices
  • Students will line up outside the gym doors on the blacktop right after school. One of the coaches will let them into the gym.

Air Quality (AQ) is something else we may be dealing with this fall.   It is safe for ALL students to practice outside if the AQ is BELOW 150.  If AQ is 150 or higher we will need to cancel practice for the day, please check AQ in the mornings if you are unsure.  When AQ reaches 100, any student with a health plan (indicating a breathing condition) will need to have a physician’s release in order to attend practice.  Any practices missed due to poor AQ are excused.

AQ 100 or above, NO PRACTICE for students with a health plan in the office.

AQ 150 or higher, NO PRACTICE, this includes races.

 HOW DO I SIGN UP?

Each participant will need to do TWO things:

  1. Register on active4youth.org (SPS registration).
  2. Complete the attached “athletes packet”. Each participant must have a completed packet returned to the school before eligible to be at practice.
