  • TOPICS/UNITS COVERED:

This year we are initiating a brand new curriculum called OpenSciEd.  Below are the units we plan to cover in 7th Grade Science:

    • 7.1 Chemical Reactions & Matter Transformations (PS1-1, PS1-2, PS1-5, LS1-8)
    • 6.6 Cells & Systems (LS1-1, LS1-2, LS1-3, LS1-8)
    • 7.3 Metabolic Reactions (LS1-3, LS1-5, LS1-7, PS1-1, PS1-2)
    • 7.4 Matter Cycling & Photosynthesis (LS1-2, LS1-6, LS2-3, PS1-3)
    • 7.5 Ecosystem Dynamics (LS2-1, LS2-2, LS2-4, LS2-5, ESS3-3, ETS1-1)

PLEASE NOTE:  Sometime around Spring Break, all 7th graders will also receive six days of Human Growth & Development instruction.  Please see the district website for more information.

  • GRADING:

Science grades are calculated using a “Total Points” system through PowerSchool.  Points are assigned for each assignment, as well as participation.  Students have until the end of each quarterly grading period to complete any absent/late work.  If a student is struggling with the material in any way, please do not hesitate to contact Mr. Rise as soon as possible so we can best diagnose how to help them.  Mr. Rise is available before and/or after school to meet.

At the end of a grading period, the student’s points are added together. A letter grade is determined by figuring a percentage based upon the total points earned by a student compared with the total points possible. Grades will be calculated according to the following scale*:

    93-100% A 73%-76%
    90-92% A- 70-72% C-
    87-89% B+ 67-69%  D+
    83-86% B 63-66%
    80-82% B-  60-62% D-
    77-79% C+ 59% or below

    * Scale may be adapted for 504/IEP/ELL required modifications and/or accommodations.

  • Re-Takes & Re-Dos:

If a student is not satisfied with the score they earned on a particular test or assignment, they have the option to either re-take or re-do it (what Mr. Rise calls a 'FIX').  Regardless of the situation, Mr. Rise expects all students to, first, READ ANY FEEDBACK he's left for a particular assignment BEFORE ATTEMPTING TO FIX IT.  In some cases, you may need to speak to Mr. Rise or contact him via email to find out more details on just what needs fixing in the first place.

  • Absent/Late Work Policy:

It is inadvisable for students to be absent often in a lab-based class such as science.  However, it is understandable that things do, sometimes, come up that are outside of our control.

Regardless, if a student is absent, it is their responsibility to talk to/email Mr. Rise to get the information they missed.  Mr. Rise has locations in class and on his TEAMS page to help assist in this regard.

Typically, an absent student will receive two (2) days for each day of school missed to make up the work.  [EXAMPLE: If a student were out sick for three days, they would be permitted six school days (from the time they return) to complete and turn in their missing work.]  If more time is needed, please email Mr. Rise directly with your request.

In Mr. Rise's classes, students can expect some sort of POINT DEDUCTION FOR LATE WORK.  Typically, the deduction is 25% of the total possible score (example, minus 5 points for a 20 point assignment), which results in a maximum grade of 75% or C.  In addition, Mr. Rise will indicate the assignment was late by marking the assignment with an 'L' (for Late) in PowerSchool.

IMPORTANT NOTE:  All assignments for a particular quarter 'close' on the last day of the grading period.  Assignments can no longer be made up after this time.
