Welcome to Algebra

  • Welcome to Algebra at Salk Middle School. I am excited to be teaching your young person this year!

This class is open to students who have had ACCELERATION in their previous math class or those who are ready for an extra challenge in MS this year!  Remember this is a High School Credited class and expectations are high for when students take this class.

Our Math Curriclum is Carnigie for the HS courses.  We use a variety of tools with this curriculum including: Interactive Notebook, Mathia, Blackboard, Kahn Academy, & a variety of other resources.

We cover a variety of topics in Algebra this year. The content covered is grouped into Modules and then further into topics as follows:

    Module 1--Searching for Patterns

    • Topic 1: Quantities & Relationships
    • Topic 2: Sequences
    • Topic 3: Linear Regressions

    Module 2--Exploring Constant Change

    • Topic 1: Linear Functions
    • Topic 2: Solving Linear Equations & Inequalities
    • Topic 3: Systems of Equations & Inequalities
    • Topic 4: Functions Derived from Linear Relationships

    Module 3--Investigating Growth & Decay

    • Topic 1: Intro to Exponential Functions
    • Topic 2: Using Exponential Equations

    Module 4--Describing Distributions

    • Topic 1: One Variable Statistics
    • Topic 2: Two Variable Categorical Data

    Module 5--Maximizing & Minimizing

    • Topic 1: Introduction to Quadratic Functions
    • Topic 2: Solving Quadratic Equations
    • Topic 3: Applications of Quadratics

Although we cover a lot of topics throughout the year, remember we may or may not follow this exact order.  Based on time allowed & the needs of our students we may move topics to the end of the year or shorten some topics to focus our efforts on the most important Algebra topics.  If you ever have questions, just let me know!

I am looking forward to an amazing year!

Let us dive right in!
  • SKILLS students MUST have to be successful in this class are:

    • Fluently use all operations with positive, negative, & fraction numbers
    • Solve multi-step equations
    • Graph a line & write equation of a line
    • Combine like terms & distribution

There is a Summer Online Algebra Bridge class that covers these topics and many more that can help prepare students for Algebra.  Go to the SPS website & look on Virtual & Blended learning in the school list to get signed up!
