New to Spokane Public Schools?

  • Welcome and thank you for choosing our school district! The following information will help you get started:

  • Neighborhood School Registration

After confirming that you reside within SPS boundaries, you can Register Online at your assigned neighborhood school. You will be prompted to create an online account and can submit an online registration form for your student(s).

The following documents are needed to complete your student(s) registration:

    • Proof of age (birth certificate, passport, etc.)
    • Proof of address (utility bill)
    • Parent/guardian photo ID
    • Medically verified immunization records (2 options)
      • Option 1: Download form to be completed and signed by a health care provider and parent
      • Option 2:  Create an account with MyIR to download a copy of your child's immunization records from their system. These records are system verified and do not need the signature of a parent/guardian or healthcare provider.

Files can be uploaded with your online registration (DOC, DOCX, PDF, TXT, RTF, XLS, XLSX, BMP, GIF, JPG, JPEG, and PNG are acceptable file types), or you can bring copies to your school. Contact High Schools for office hours; Elementary and Middle School offices will re-open in August (see Important Dates).

    • Elementary school students who attend their neighborhood school and live outside the walk boundary (more than a 1-mile straight line distance from school to home)
    • Middle school students who attend their neighborhood school and live outside the walk boundary (more than a 1.5-mile straight line distance from school to home)
    • High school students who attend their neighborhood high school, live outside the walk boundary (more than a 1.5-mile straight line distance from school to home), and live outside Spokane Transit Authority’s service area
      • NOTE: SPS high school students who live outside the walk boundary and within STA’s service area will use STA for school transportation. All SPS high school students have access to unlimited rides on STA buses with their student ID card.
    • K-8 Option school students
    • 9-12 Option school students living outside STA’s service area

Yellow bus registration will open in summer 2024. You will need your student's date of birth and student ID number. If you don’t know your student’s ID number, please send a message to Let’s Talk

Please note that bus stops are tentative. Families will be notified of finalized routes and stops in mid-August.

  • Option and Choice Schools

SPS offers an array of school options so that families have the freedom to choose the school that is right for their child. Students who benefit from alternative learning environments may be interested in applying to our Option Schools and Programs. Option School and Program students are eligible for yellow bus transportation.

We also accept applications for students who would like to attend a different SPS neighborhood school, which we call School Choice. Choice students are not eligible for yellow bus transportation.

Space is limited, and acceptance is determined by lottery following the annual Option and Choice School Application Priority Window (Jan. 2-Feb. 15 for grades 1-12; March 1-31 for kindergarten). Applications received outside of the Priority Window will be added to the waitlist in the order they are received until next year.

    Option and Choice School Application

To apply to an Option or Choice School, please first complete a New Student Registration form if you are new to the district, and then Apply Online for choice. You will be prompted to create an online account and can submit three Option or Choice School preferences for your student(s).

Students who are waitlisted at an Option or Choice School should proceed with registration at their neighborhood school (Register Online). If a spot becomes available at one of your choices, you will be contacted directly by the school and the registration will be transferred upon acceptance.

  • Out-of-District Transfer

Spokane Public Schools welcomes transfer requests from all students interested in attending school in our district. Please call 509.354.7393 to obtain an interdistrict transfer form. Once the form is submitted and accepted, you can Apply Online.

To ensure we do not compromise the quality of our educational programs, transfer requests from those who live outside district boundaries will be considered based on several factors, including adequate staffing and enrollment capacity, fiscal uncertainties and program availability and capacity. All transfer requests from those outside our district will be considered after transfers from within the district have been completed.

  • Before and After School Care

Express Child Care provides quality, convenient childcare to elementary students (Grades K-5) enrolled in Spokane Public Schools. A list of sites can be found at Express Program Information.

Families who applied for Express in June will receive confirmation about acceptance by the end of July.

New applications received between mid-July and mid-August will typically receive a response within 48 hours. Applications submitted in late August may see an increase in response time as waitlists are evaluated.

The Express website is updated as sites reach capacity so families are aware that they may receive waitlist placement until further notice.

To apply, please visit Express Registration.

For the 2023-24 school year, families will begin receiving confirmations starting in mid-July. Families registering after July will hear within 2-3 working days of registration. Because of the increase in applicants in mid- to late-August, there is a longer response time with the potential of being placed on a waitlist. The 2023-24 Express registration will be updated regularly to inform families on which express sites are full.

  • Important Dates for 2024-25

Aug. 29 and 30: Launch Conferences

Sept. 2: Labor Day (District holiday)

Sept. 3: First day of school (Grades 1-12)

Sept. 4: First day of school (Kindergarten)

Kindergarten students start school on an alternating A/B group rotation starting Sept. 4; schools will notify families of their group. All students will attend together starting Sept. 10.

See the District Calendar for a complete 2024-25 Calendar.

  • School Supply Lists

A recommend supply list for students grades K-5 can be found on Elementary School homepages. Please note that 2024-25 school supply lists will be finalized in spring 2024.

As middle and high school students have different classes with different supply needs, there is not a universal secondary supply list. Please refer to your Middle School or High School homepage for updates, or send your school a message at Let’s Talk.
